Artist Focus: Mia Christopher

Mia Christopher’s brightly saturated,playful compositions feature an imaginative, free-wheeling world of stacks:stacked people, stacked animals, stacked stones, stacked shapes. Long-limbedmen, women and cats pile, contort and consort in abstract planes to formsculptural shapes; assisting each other to form human Jenga towers, or partneringup to accomplish their building or balancing tasks. In Mia’s art, life is ajuggling act of varying degrees of fairness or difficulty: Some figures seembesieged and tense (holding onto ferns,ropes or brightly-colored balls for dear life), others seem to soar out of thepicture plane with no effort whatsoever.

We’ve asked Mia, a talentedmultidisciplinary artist and avid cat-lover, to answer some questions for HAND!

Q: Where are you located now and can you describe your environment to us and how you ended up there?

A: The condensed, but still long, answer to this question is that I currently live in a converted studio apartment in an old Victorian building in San Francisco's Mission District. I live and work here, accompanied by my two cats, Bruno and Eloise. I was born in Texas. My family lived there until I was 3 and a half years old, then moved to New Jersey. Then when I was 6 we moved to Northern California. We lived just north of San Francisco up until my family moved to the western Chicago suburbs when I was 14. I lived there until I graduated high school at 17, then I moved to Chicago and started art school at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago My focus at the time was on photography, but I felt I needed to explore other practices and take some time off of school to figure out what it really was I wanted to do and where I wanted to be. After a year and a half at SAIC I ended up moving back to Northern California on my own and taking printmaking classes at City College of San Francisco. I eventually transferred to California College of the Arts in Oakland, and will be receiving my BFA from there in the Spring of 2012.

Q: What influences or inspires your drawing practice?

A: Color, balance, relationships, exploration, reading, quiet time, loud time.

Q: Would you consider drawing to be your primary medium or mode of expression? If not, what is and how does drawing supplement your practice?

A: Yes I would. I love to draw! I keep sketchbooks that I draw in all of the time obsessively. My biggest guilty pleasure is buying brand new pens. Drawing a lot is key for me no matter what it is I end up making. Even as my work evolves into different areas and mediums, drawing will likely always remain an integral part of my process.

Q. Outside of drawing, what do you enjoy doing? How do you spend your time? Where do you like to go?

A: In San Francisco I like going to places with beautiful views like Dolores Park, Buena Vista, the Marin Headlands, Ocean Beach and the Pacific Coastal Trail, and so many more places. I live in the Mission District which is full of activity, so whenever I have been holed up in my studio for too many days I can walk around my neighborhood and quickly get a fresh perspective. I am also really into cuddling with my cats and eating brunch.

Q. What artists, living or dead, would you like to have at your dinner table or go get a drink/coffee/tea with? Whom would you ideally like to show with?

A: I would love to have drinks and desserts with I would say Maira Kalman, Kiki Smith, Miranda July, Monique Prieto, Jeffrey Brown, Jockum Nordstrom and Mamma Andersson. I will cut off the list at seven but I could go on and on! In reality though, I am quite shy and that dinner would be just about the end of my nerves!

Whom would I ideally like to show with? There are so many amazing people working right now that I dream of someday showing with. I am happy to show with artists who work hard and put their all into their work and truly believe in what they are doing.

Artist Focus: Rithika Merchant

We first stumbled upon Rithika Merchant's work over at Doodler's Anonymous last year and shamelessly recruited her into HAND right away, smitten with her light-handed, kaleidoscopic drawings of imaginary and anthropomorphic creatures. Her images are distinctively jewel-toned and often cut into fragments or puzzle pieces, forming a mosaic-like effect evoking decorative tiles or reliefs. With a nod to the historical and the ornamental, her creations exist poetically outside of time within their own mythology; floating out of fish or eagle boats, growing out of the ground or forming whimsical inter-species conversations.

Rithika was born and raised in Bombay, India but currently lives in Barcelona, Spain. She is a 2008 graduate of Parsons The New School for Design and has lived, traveled and studied all over the world, including Portugal, Greece, the Galapagos Islands and New York. Her culturally pluralist upbringing has inspired a personal folklore which is self-created and adheres to no one tradition, with differing shapes and concepts coming together to form one coherent vision or image. Q. Where are you located now and can you describe your environment to us and how you ended up there?

A: I currently live in Barcelona. I grew up in Bombay, India. When I was 18 I moved to New York City for college. After graduating I went to Portugal to do an artist residency. I fell in love with Lisbon and decided to live there for a while. While I was in Lisbon I met and ended up marrying my husband. We moved to Belgium for a few months so he could finished up his education. After which we decided that Barcelona is where we wanted to live.

Q. What influences or inspires your drawing practice?

A: Animals and Folk Tales.

Q. Would you consider drawing to be your primary medium or mode of expression? If not, what is and how does drawing supplement your practice?

A: Yes, drawing and painting for sure. I feel I can express myself best with these mediums.

Q. Outside of drawing, what do you enjoy doing? How do you spend your time? Where do you like to go?

A: I like to play guitar, swim in the ocean and watch films. I also really enjoying cooking. If the weather is nice I like to go hiking in the mountains.

Q. What artists, living or dead, would you like to have at your dinner table or go get a drink/coffee/tea with? Whom would you ideally like to show with?

A: I would love to have beautiful dinner party with Frida Khalo and Marina Abramovich. My ideal artist to show with would be Monica Canilao. I adore her work.

Artist Focus: Cendrine Rovini

Cendrine Rovini is a French artist born in the South of France and currently living in Cantal. She has been kind enough to share images of her absolutely breathtaking surroundings and some insight into her influences and practice. We are smitten with her delicately-hued images of women, girls, birds and mermaids: They are sublime and enchanting, yet always rooted in the primal, with the unmistakably strong cores that all folklore heroines should possess. Cendrine's personal mythology stems from that twilight zone between sleep and wakefulness: Her lightly-etched images appear on the verge of disappearing, but not without making a mythic impression on the viewer first ...

Q. Where are you located now and can you describe your environment to us and how you ended up there?

A: I'm living in a little city named Riom-ès-Montagnes in the Cantal (France). This is one of the most beautiful places I've ever lived in, there are soft green mountains, lakes and all this country is an ancient giant volcano... This is so inspiring to me !

Q. What influences or inspires your drawing practice?

A: Moments when I'm near of the dream, not really sleeping, not really awake, then images to draw come to my mind... I'm also inspired by images by other artists from the past or present. I love medieval and Renaissance pictures, vintage portraits photographs from the 19th century with such beautiful semi-erased colors and blurred natural effects brought by the time, I'm also in love with vintage Japanese prints with some beautiful ladies, the Bijingas.

Q. Would you consider drawing to be your primary medium or mode of expression? If not, what is and how does drawing supplement your practice?

A: I mostly make drawings but they can also be mixed medias because I love using together watercolor, graphite, colored pencil, gouache, marker or acrylic. I love working on paper : watercolor paper, xuan chinese paper, cardboard, vintage paper, mouldy paper and all kind of found papers. I'm actually working on a large scale format: a beautiful vintage bed sheet from my grandmother... I want to explore the possibilities of the fabric as a medium for art.

Q. Outside of drawing, what do you enjoy doing? How do you spend your time? Where do you like to go?

A: I'm obsessed with drawing and art. I can spend all the day working and looking and sharing images. But I'm also a mother of two children and spend time with them and my partner. I love reading, cooking and I like very much making big walks in the nature near of our home.

Q. What artists, living or dead, would you like to have at your dinner table or go get a drink/coffee/tea with? Whom would you ideally like to show with?

A: I would like to invite Artemisia Gentileschi and Kiki Smith at my dinner table and would feel tremendously happy to make a show with Fay Ku, Jane O' Sullivan, Sofia Arnold, Laura Ferrara, Maria Mantella, Roseau and Some Milk.

Artist Focus: Jacqueline Kari Bos

HAND Drawing is excited to introduce a Q+A series with our amazing contributors, starting with the lovely and talented Jacqueline Kari Bos. We were instantly captivated by Jacqueline's unique mythology and self-described preference for minty tea (as well as her loving homages to The Golden Girls).

Her dreamy small-scale works are marked by a vibrant pastel palette and whimsical hand-drawn characters making their way around cosmic found-image landscapes. Children scale magic mountains, gather wood, flaunt tribal masks, ride rhinos, and feed their animal friends amidst teepee villages which cast patterned shadows in the sun. We'd love to live vicariously through any of her charming, free-spirited creations.

Q: Where are you located now and can you describe your environment to us and how you ended up there?

A: I live in Portland Oregon right now, I’ve taken a bit of a journey getting here. I grew up in Virginia, lived briefly in NYC, moved to Portland then moved back to Brooklyn, and have now returned to Portland. It’s been a hectic few years.

Q: What influences or inspires your drawing practice?

A: Right now I’ve been looking at geometric patterns from textile designs and getting inspired by working bits of pattern into my illustrations. Caffeine is also hugely helpful.

Q: Would you consider drawing to be your primary medium or mode of expression? If not, what is and how does drawing supplement your practice?

A: Yep, I think everything stems from drawing, it’s like going back to basics.

Q: Outside of drawing, what do you enjoy doing? How do you spend your time? Where do you like to go?

A: Art wise, I do a bit of printmaking, textile designing, and sewing. Outside of art activities, the best days are spent with close friends, going out for breakfast, taking walks around Portland, and seeing where the day takes us. I’m totally a homebody so most days I really enjoy playing around my apt, cooking, reading, chasing my kitty and daydreaming. I really need to get out more.

Q: What artists, living or dead, would you like to have at your dinner table or go get a drink/coffee/tea with? Whom would you ideally like to show with?

A: I’d invite Egon Schiele over for certain. He’s a dark and twisty fellow, which I’m sure would make for some good drunken conversations. In the living realm, having a show with E.V. Day would be amazing, she does these really dynamic full room sculptures, usually with fabric and string that it would be really interesting to pair with a wrap around wall illustration.
